BRVO (Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion)
Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion (BRVO) occurs when one of the small veins in the retina becomes blocked, leading to vision problems due to bleeding and fluid leakage.
Causes & Risk Factors:
- High blood pressure (most common)
- Diabetes
- Atherosclerosis-BRVO may occur when atherosclerosis causes the walls of your arteries to thicken and harden. These arteries can cross over and exert pressure on a vein.
- High cholesterol
- Glaucoma
- Smoking
- Age (more common in people over 50).
When a vein becomes blocked, blood and fluid leak into the retina. This can cause the macula to swell, impacting central vision. Over time, if circulation is compromised, nerve cells in the eye may deteriorate, leading to further vision loss.
In Ayurveda, BRVO is often associated with imbalances in the Pitta and Kapha doshas. Pitta imbalance can lead to vascular changes and blockages, while Kapha contributes to the formation of obstructions. The treatment approach aims to pacify these doshas, enhance blood circulation, and reduce retinal inflammation.
Symptoms of BRVO:
- Blurry or distorted vision
- Sudden loss of vision in part of the eye
- Dark spots or floaters in vision
Commonest Sign:
The most common sign of branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) is a loss of vision or blurred vision in part of the eye. This can occur suddenly or worsen over a few hours or days. In some cases, vision loss may be immediate.
You might also notice floaters—dark spots, lines, or squiggles in your vision. These are shadows cast by small clumps of blood that leak into the vitreous from the retinal vessels.
