Heredomacular degeneration
Heredomacular degeneration is a genetic disorder that affect the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision.
It is classified as a subtype of primary retinal degeneration, affecting the neuroepithelium (the rod-cone layer), which is the primary neuron layer of the retina.
This condition is characterised by bilateral macular involvement and is hereditary in nature, but does not involve any central nervous system changes.
In Ayurveda, this condition can be linked to Drishti Dosha (eye disorders) and is primarily associated with an imbalance in Pitta Dosha, along with Vata imbalances leading to degeneration.
Ayurvedic Perspective on Heredomacular Degeneration
- Pitta aggravation leads to inflammation and damage to the eye tissues.
- Vata aggravation causes dryness and degeneration of retinal cells.
- Kapha imbalance may contribute to blockages in microcirculation.
Common Types of Hereditary Macular Degeneration:
- Stargardt Disease – The most common inherited macular dystrophy, usually beginning in childhood or adolescence, leading to progressive central vision loss.
- Best Disease (Best Vitelliform Macular Dystrophy) – A genetic condition that causes yellowish lesions in the macula, affecting central vision.
- Cone-Rod Dystrophy – A condition that damages both cone and rod cells in the retina, leading to vision loss.
Symptoms:
- Blurred or distorted central vision
- Difficulty recognizing faces or reading
- Sensitivity to light (photophobia)
- Dark or missing spots in vision (scotomas)
- Slow adjustment from light to dark environments
Causes:
- Caused by genetic mutations passed down from parents
- Inherited in different patterns (dominant, recessive, or X-linked)
- Defects in genes related to retinal cell function and metabolism
Diagnosis:
- Genetic testing to confirm hereditary patterns
- Optical coherence tomography (OCT) to visualize retinal layers
- Fundus photography to examine macular changes
- Electroretinography (ERG) to test retinal function
- Fluorescein angiography to check blood flow in the retina
Ayurvedic Treatment Approaches
While Ayurvedic treatments cannot completely reverse genetic disorders, they may help slow degeneration, improve eye health, and support vision.
Dietary & Lifestyle Recommendations
- Consume Pitta-pacifying foods – Include cooling and antioxidant-rich foods like Amla, leafy greens, ghee, and berries.
- Avoid excessive heat exposure – Protect eyes from strong sunlight.
- Regular eye exercises – Palming, Trataka (candle gazing), and blinking exercises.
- Reduce screen time – Minimize blue light exposure from screens.
