Retinitis Pigmentosa

Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) is a group of rare genetic disorders that cause progressive vision loss due to the degeneration of the retina, specifically the rod and cone photoreceptor cells. It often leads to night blindness, loss of peripheral (side) vision, and, in severe cases, complete blindness.

Ayurveda, classifies Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) as a Dṛṣṭi Rog (eye disorder) and associates it with an imbalance in the Pitta and Vata doshas, leading to the degeneration of retinal cells.

Causes

RP is caused by mutations in over 100 different genes that affect the retina's function. These mutations lead to the gradual breakdown of photoreceptor cells, starting with rods (responsible for night vision) and later affecting cones (responsible for color and central vision).

Causes in Ayurveda

RP is primarily linked to:

  • Pitta imbalance → Causes inflammation and damage to retinal tissues.
  • Vata imbalance → Leads to dryness and degeneration of eye structures.
  • Rakta Dhatu (blood tissue) disorder → Poor blood circulation affects retinal nourishment.
  • Ojas depletion → Weakens the body's ability to repair and maintain eye health.

Symptoms

  • Night blindness (nyctalopia) – Difficulty seeing in low light.
  • Tunnel vision – Gradual loss of peripheral vision.
  • Difficulty adapting to changes in lighting – Eyes take longer to adjust between bright and dark environments.(Also, known as delayed dark adaptation-DDA)
  • Reduced color perception – In advanced stages, color vision may be affected.
  • Blind spots – Patchy vision loss that worsens over time.
  • Complete blindness – In severe cases, vision can be entirely lost.

Diagnosis

  • Genetic testing – Identifies the specific mutation causing RP.
  • Electroretinography (ERG) – Measures retinal electrical activity to assess function.
  • Visual field test – Determines peripheral vision loss.
  • Optical coherence tomography (OCT) – Scans the retina to check for damage.
  • Fundus photography – Captures images of the retina to track changes.

 Management

  • Sunglasses & UV protection – Protecting eyes from sunlight may help preserve vision.
  • Low vision aids – Magnifiers, screen readers, and special glasses can enhance remaining vision.

Ayurvedic Diet & Lifestyle

Foods to Include:

  • Leafy greens (spinach, moringa) for lutein.
  • Ghee (clarified butter) for retinal nourishment.
  • Nuts & seeds (almonds, flaxseeds) for Omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Fresh fruits (papaya, carrot, orange) for Vitamin A.

Foods to Avoid:

Spicy, fried, and processed foods (aggravate Pitta).

Excess salt and sugar (affect circulation).

  • Lifestyle Tips:
  • Daily eye exercises (Trataka meditation, palming).
  • Avoid excessive screen exposure and bright lights.
  • Proper sleep and stress management (yoga, pranayama).
