Hypertensive Retinopathy is damage to the retina due to long-term high blood pressure. It affects the blood vessels in the eye, leading to vision problems and, in severe cases, blindness.

Symptoms:

• Blurred or reduced vision
• Double vision
• Headaches

• Blood spots (hemorrhages) in the retina
• Swelling of the optic nerve (in severe cases)

On Fundus examination, one may find:

- Advanced Retinopathy Lesions: These may include microaneurysms, blot or flame haemorrhages, ischemic changes such as cotton wool spots, hard exudates, and, in severe cases, optic disc swelling (optic disc oedema), a macular star (a ring of exudates around the retina), and visual acuity loss, often due to macular involvement.

- Altered Blood Flow: Strongly modulated blood flow pulse in central and branch arteries can be a result of hypertension. Laser Doppler imaging may reveal changes in hemodynamics non-invasively.

In Ayurveda, hypertensive retinopathy can be understood as a condition caused by an imbalance in Pitta and Vata doshas, affecting the Rakta Dhatu (blood tissue) and Drishti (vision system). The elevated blood pressure (Vyana Vayu imbalance) leads to damage in the retinal blood vessels, causing vision problems.
