Hypermetropia

Hypermetropia, also known as hyperopia or farsightedness, is a common refractive error of the eye where distant objects can be seen more clearly than close ones. This happens because light entering the eye is focused behind the retina instead of directly on it.

In Ayurveda, hypermetropia (farsightedness) is linked to an imbalance in the Pitta dosha, which governs vision and the eyes. The condition is known as "Door Drishti" or "Drishti Dosha".

Causes of Hypermetropia:

  1. Shortened Eyeball – The eyeball is too short, causing light to focus behind the retina.
  2. Flat Cornea – The cornea is not curved enough to properly bend light.
  3. Weak Lens – The eye's lens is not strong enough to focus light correctly.

Symptoms:

  • Difficulty seeing close objects clearly
  • Eye strain or discomfort after reading or close work
  • Headaches
  • Squinting to see nearby objects

Diagnosis:

Hypermetropia is diagnosed through an eye exam, including:

  • Visual acuity test (reading letters on a chart)
  • Retinoscopy (checking light reflection from the retina)
  • Refraction test (determining the best corrective lens)

Treatment:

  1. Eyeglasses – Convex (+) lenses help focus light onto the retina.
  2. Contact Lenses – Work similarly to glasses but sit directly on the eye.

Causes of Hypermetropia in Ayurveda:

  1. Pitta Imbalance – Excess heat in the body can weaken eye tissues.
  2. Weak Agni (Digestive Fire) – Poor digestion affects nutrient absorption, leading to weak eye function.
  3. Overuse of Eyes – Excessive screen time, reading in dim light, and lack of eye exercises.
  4. Stress and Lifestyle Factors – Poor diet, lack of sleep, and mental strain.

     Dietary Recommendations

  • Eat cooling foods – Ghee, milk, cucumber, leafy greens, and seasonal fruits.
  • Increase Vitamin A-rich foods – Carrots, papaya, and spinach.
  • Reduce spicy, oily, and junk food – To balance Pitta dosha.

    Eye Exercises (Trataka & Yoga)

  • Trataka (Candle Gazing Meditation) – Strengthens eye muscles and improves focus.
  • Palming Exercise – Rubbing hands and placing warm palms over closed eyes.
  • Shifting & Blinking – Improves eye coordination and reduces strain.

    Lifestyle Changes

  • Avoid excessive screen time and bright artificial lights.
  • Wash eyes with rose water or Triphala-infused water.
  • Massage the soles of your feet with ghee to balance Pitta and improve vision.
